A Legacy in Solar Science
The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, under the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), has long stood as a cornerstone of solar research in India. From recording sunspots for over a century to pioneering solar instrumentation, its contributions have shaped our understanding of the Sun and its influence on Earth.
In January 2026, the observatory once again opens its doors to young scientists and students for the Kodaikanal Winter School on Solar Physics, an immersive program that bridges theory, observation, and hands-on data analysis.
School Topics
Participants will explore a wide range of topics that connect solar physics with heliophysics and space weather:
-
Overview of Solar Physics
-
Solar Telescopes and Observations
-
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)
-
Solar Atmosphere and Radiative Transfer
-
Waves in the Solar Atmosphere
-
Solar Radio Astronomy
-
Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)
-
Solar Interior and Helioseismology
-
Solar Corona, Solar Wind, and Sun–Earth Connection
-
Hands-on Sessions on Data Analysis and Techniques
Each topic is designed to deepen your understanding of solar phenomena and their effects on planetary environments — including our own.
Who Can Apply
The school is open to graduate students, early-stage researchers, and advanced undergraduates interested in solar physics, astrophysics, or space science.
Participants will get exposure to both observational and theoretical aspects of solar studies and will have the rare opportunity to work closely with experts from IIA and related research centers.
Why You Should Attend
-
Learn from leading scientists at one of India’s oldest observatories.
-
Experience hands-on solar data analysis sessions.
-
Explore topics that connect the Sun’s physics with real-world space weather phenomena.
-
Immerse yourself in Kodaikanal’s pristine mountain setting — a place where solar astronomy has thrived for over a century.
